Gestalt psychology, school of psychology founded in the 20th century that provided the foundation for the modern study of perception. Gestalt theory emphasizes that the whole of anything is greater than its parts. That is, the attributes of the whole are not deducible from analysis of the parts in isolation.

It is very difficult for us to see others in all their various facets. When we meditate we are able to see a better whole picture of an event or a person, rather than discrete parts.

Gestalt is a German word meaning "form," "pattern," or "configuration". It describes an organized whole whose properties cannot be predicted or fully understood just by looking at its individual parts. The core idea is summarized by the phrase: "the whole is different from (or greater than) the sum of its parts".
