Paramahansa Yogananda has quite a lot of information on food and nutrition in the lessons: Specifically Lesson 83 In it he comments that the high protein value of meat, fish and poultry is offset by their deteriorizing effect on the body. He also discourages the use of white flour because it 'acts like a glue in the intestines and obstructs the expulsion of body waste materials'. He recomends vegetable proteins found in flour, legumes and nuts as well as cheese eggs and milk. He has many recipes for vitality and energy in these lessons. i would highly recommend them to any one suffering physical illness. i would like to copy many of the quotes here but i think it would be better if you could read the whole lesson and gain all the benefits. i am now in my late 50's and still enjoy good health. Of course this body is not going to go on for ever. Althuogh it  sure helps to have a Master give you advice on health: for this i am grateful. "It is not easy to have a good disposition if one is ill, and you are made ill mostly by eating the wrong food" Paramahansa Yogananda

(http://and)Nomaste mccoy and others interested

It has been sometime since we opened this thread. If we look at the first entry we see the various foods Paramaha JBnsa Yogananda listed and their affects on human consciousness. mccoy I have been motivated by you to get a juicer working again that was missing some parts. Now I juice carrots, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach etc. quite regularly if prices allow. You have emphasized a vegetarian diet high in vegetables and low in carbohydrates. I just wanted to mention the importance of the spiritual value of fruit in our diet as well. As you can see in Yogananda's list. Happy and healthy eating! You may have noticed that when people have a lot of swings in their emotions they gravitate towards darker foods like meats and a lot of junk food and sweets. People who stick to a vegetarian and fruitarian diet have less anger and are more of a peaceful disposition. I believe I need more bananas for humbleness.   ;)

Steve, I do not agree with those who say not to eat fruit. Recently, there is this demonization of fructose, which requires an hepatic metabolism similar to alcohol. But natural fructose and sugars in fruit enjoy the synergy of fibers, polyphenols and other phytochemicals. Only habit I changed, I'm eating fruit with skin when possible. I'll eat the white fibre underneath the skin of oranges as well.
Fruits make up a very digestible and healthy source of carbs. Those who need to cut carbs for other purposes need to cut fruit, but I'm happy I don't need it. Fruit, like Yogananda says, is among the most sattwic fruit and only exceptionally we should avoid it (another reason may be dental pains for its acidity, but that deserves a visit to the dentist and a source of vitamins D and K2)

I have always ate the skins on tomatoes, peaches, apples and potatoes. Most of the minerals in potatoes are around and in the skins. I do not know about the other fruits but many people have warned me about cleaning them better because of pesticide spray on the skins. One friend told me just wiping off for instance a tomatoe, is not enough. They need to be cleaned in a sink. Hmmmm. I do try to listen to friends. I listened to you and have had more fresh vegetables and juiced vegetables. I still juice now mccoy. I don't think I have done so much juicing since I lived in California. But since my health seems good at the moment I see no reason to avoid fruits and all sugars. Although reading about the Romans having a full head of teeth with no decay makes me wonder about a culture who puts sugar in all processed food. The scientists (that I read) say the Romans did not have decay of teeth like Westerners because they did not eat sugar.

Beef and veal eating was found to disturb the astral and spiritual vibrations of the human body. Forswear pork, bacon, ham Sausage, also veal and beef; as they containuric and other uremic poisons. Fruits especially have a magnetic quality, and they don't clog the system. Too much protein and strachy food retain the poisons in your body.  Fruits are good for spiritualizing the body. I do not mean that you should not eat any protein ; but those who eat too much protein and meats will keep on the sense plane. Too much food produces greed, which will cause you to be thrown back to this plane of change.~  Paramahansa Yogananda
