Steve, it is alas a known fact that hard tarmac may be not too friendly on runners' knees. I started again tonite but on soft sand. It's more fatiguing, but it also means that I work out more in a smaller time. Knee seems to be all right now, if it keeps like that, I'll run again in 3 days, otherwise I'll wait some more.
Snow on the beach is pretty rare but not unheard of.
